The Lake St. Martin Underwater Forest is located near Galt, Ontario and covers an area of 3 hectares (7 acres). It was formed by a landslide that occurred between 2,000 BC and 1 AD.
The Lake Pate Underwater Forest is located off the coast of Mozambique in Africa where it covers an area of 17 square kilometers (6 square miles) with submerged trees reaching up to 20 meters high!
The Lake Williston Underwater Forest can be found in Alaska but unfortunately hasn’t survived very well due to climate change affecting its ecosystem
The most well-known underwater forest
The most well-known forest, however, is the “Lake Kaindy” Underwater Forest in Kazakhstan. It’s one of the largest freshwater lakes in Central Asia and it has been home to a thriving ecosystem for over 100 years. In the early 1900s, thousands of sturgeon fish were caught by local fishermen on this lake. The locals at the time used their fishing nets to scoop up tons of sturgeon fish from Lake Kaindy every year—but they weren’t aware that there was an entire forest underwater!
As a result of pollution and waste dumping into Lake Kaindy over time, many species died out including trees like oak and elm trees as well as bushes such as hawthorn berries (hazelnut) shrubs and grasses that had once covered much of what we now call “The Underwater Forest”.
