James Cameron’s dives into the Titanic
James Cameron, the director of Titanic and Avatar, has made a dive to the shipwreck site.
The filmmaker descended to the wreck of the RMS Titanic on Saturday in a submersible owned by billionaire explorer Richard Branson.
It was the first time Cameron had visited the ship since he directed a crew of marine scientists and engineers in 2012 to explore it using a nuclear-powered robot submarine.
At that time, he said he was disappointed that his team did not have time to make much use of their robotic vehicle before it ran out of power and they had to return it to its mothership some three-and-a-half miles above them on the surface.
Cameron has since returned several times with other scientists, but this was his first time diving solo in his own submersible – which he called Deepsea Challenger after the film he made about his quest for the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
“It’s been 15 years since I’ve been down,” Cameron told National Geographic News after resurfacing from his dive.”So it was quite an experience.”
